What problems does it cause

  • typically starts with pins and needles or numbness in the hand at night or on waking
  • feeling you slept wrong on your arm
  • may feel like the whole hand is affected
  • often shaking the hand out to get rid of the tingling
  • can progress to pain, tingling and/or numbness during activities such as writing, typing and gripping

What solutions can be offered

  • a splint to keep the wrist in a straight position can often be helpful particularly for night symptoms
  • an injection is helpful to most patients but its effectiveness and duration is variable
  • surgery to release and make more room for the nerve is indicated for those with severe symptoms, or when other treatments have not worked
